Once the investigators revealed the likely cause, trijet lovers everywhere hoped inspections and corrective action would help the MD-11 return to the skies again. Alas, a large U.S. cargo airline announced in January 2026 that it would be retiring its MD-11F fleet. The jets may never fly again.
